  1. The price is the worst piece of information here: only 3 of the 14 vendors state one, 11 do not. In this market the comparison almost always begins with a quotation.
  2. It is decided by stock management — whether batches, serial numbers and several locations are supported. That appears in no data sheet as a yes or no, but as a gradation.
  3. All 14 solutions calculate in several currencies. For a business that imports, that is the precondition and not the argument.

Five criteria in the order in which they shorten the list

Ordered by effect. In inventory software, stock management comes first, because it cannot be retrofitted later.

  1. How your stock is managed

    Batches, serial numbers, minimum shelf life, several locations: what you need decides the list. Whoever handles food or medical devices needs batches without exception — and will not find them in every solution.

  2. Purchasing and ordering

    Whether the solution generates order proposals from minimum stock levels, or whether somebody keeps a list. That is the difference between a report and a weekly task.

  3. Connections

    13 of the 14 solutions offer an open interface. In inventory management it is almost always needed: till, online shop and accounting all touch the same item master, and every missing link is a place where stock figures drift apart.

  4. Access in the warehouse

    Whoever records in the warehouse or on the workshop floor needs a device and a connection. 12 of the 14 solutions keep working without a connection, 2 are pure cloud. That sounds like an edge case and in a basement store it is daily life.

  5. Price and price information

    The price last, and here with emphasis: only 3 of the 14 vendors publish one. For the other 11 the comparison starts with a quotation — 7 sell only through distribution partners, 3 give prices only on request. Budget that time.

Why a price so rarely appears here

11 of the 14 vendors state no price, and in inventory software that is no accident. The price depends on modules, on the number of users, on locations and on implementation — and implementation is the bigger item here: item master, stock levels, suppliers and price lists have to be migrated and checked before the system counts anything.

For you that means: demand two separate figures in every quotation. The running amount per month, and the one-off implementation including data migration. Whoever names only the first has not calculated the second.

Migrating from an existing solution

The right moment is not the change of financial year but the point of lowest stock. What gets migrated are stock levels, and every level that is wrong at the move stays wrong — until the next stocktake.

In practice: stocktake before the migration, not after. And record the old stock as a figure, so the opening in the new system can be checked against it.

Before the switch, three things belong clarified: the export format for items, stock levels and suppliers, whether batches and serial numbers come along, and who answers for the difference if the totals do not agree.

What does inventory software cost in Switzerland?

Only 3 of the 14 vendors compared publish a price; they range from CHF 29.– to CHF 65.– a month, excluding VAT, as of July 2026. For 11 solutions the price starts with a quotation. A median across 3 values would not be information, which is why there is none here.

Do I need inventory software or is accounting enough?

As soon as stock has to be tracked, accounting is not enough: it knows values, not units. For a business that sells only services, inventory software is superfluous — even though it comes with every all-in-one solution.

Is the stock function in an all-in-one solution enough?

Often yes, and the comparison table of all-in-one solutions carries «orders & stock» as a row of its own with the recorded gradations. A dedicated solution pays off when batches, serial numbers or several locations are part of the core business.

What about customs and imports?

Customs declaration and foreign currency are this category’s two Swiss particularities and appear in the comparison table as rows of their own. All 14 solutions calculate in several currencies; on customs declaration they differ.
